Where have all the Impatiens gone? If you’ve seen the news this spring, you know Impatiens walleriana (what we call impatiens) — as a “go to” shade garden flower — is dead.

In 2012, a fungal disease (a strain of Downy Mildew) went wild in the U.S., spreading to 33 states. It’s a parasite that murders Impatiens walleriana. It travels by water and air, kills the flowers, infects the soil, and moves on to new prey. Fungicides don’t work, and once your soil’s infected, even experts are unsure how many years it takes to recover.

Some stores still sell impatiens, ensuring the disease will keep spreading. A friend of mine just planted some, saying she’s never seen the disease. Well, I have. Last summer, in the industrial park where I type these words, giant beds of impatiens were all dead by July.

It’s sad, BUT there’s an upside! It’s a time to explore new plants. Check out The Complete Shade Gardener by George Schenk, a garden classic recommended to me by horticulturist Nancy Wallace. Nancy, by the way, was a leader in warning gardeners about Impatiens. She has great recommendations. (More on that later!)

Here are 5 shade-loving flowers Schenk suggests in The Complete Shade Gardener. They’re safe for your garden, porch, and patio.

1. New Guinea Impatiens

Image: CC BY-SA 3.0 Aruna

Impatiens Walleriana is only one species of impatiens. Another species, somewhat larger, and equally beautiful, is New Guinea Impatiens. This flower doesn’t get “the disease”.

It’s a beautiful flower, somewhat larger than Impatiens walleriana, and makes a great shade flower.

“Like their more common cousins,” says the plant encyclopedia at BHG.com, “New Guinea impatiens provide hard-to-find brilliant color in shade. And it’s not just the flowers. The foliage is often brilliantly, exotically colorful as well.”

“These tropical plants really shine in containers, where they thrive in the perfect soil and drainage, but they also do well in the ground as long as you take the time to improve the soil and work in plenty of compost. Note that they’re a bit more sun-tolerant than common impatiens.”

2. Browallia

Browallia

In The Complete Shade Gardener, George Schenk says only 3 other annuals can compare with Impatiens in shade-tolerance. One of these is Browallia.

“All browallias,” Schenk writes, “are shade plants of first value and will follow nearly as far as Impatiens into the deeps of shade.”

“Browallia earns its nicknames of amethyst flower and sapphire flower for the richness of its small blue flowers,” says BHG.com, “which pop out like jewels against the bright green of its foliage.”

“A tidy mounding plant, it’s great in containers or planted as edging in a neat row at the front of the border.”

3. Wax Begonia

Wax Begonia (Begonia semperflorens)

The 2nd annual that Schenk says can compete with Impatiens in shade tolerance is the Wax Begonia (also called Fibrous Begonia or Begonia semperflorens). The “wax” name comes from the glossy leaves and flowers.

“Beloved around the world as the stuff of floral clocks,” says Schenk, “the soldiers of flower battalions ordered to spell out city mottoes on civic lawns, or to stand in curlicues in front of clubhouses.”

“Talk about foolproof,” says BHG. “Annual begonia is about as easy as it gets. It does well in a variety of conditions, but to keep it its most luxuriant best, give it light shade; rich, well-drained soil; and ample water. It also loves plenty of fertilizer, so be generous.”

4. Coleus

Shade-Loving Coleus

Finally, the last annual that Schenk says campares with Impatiens in shade tolerance is Coleus — basically a tropical plant that becomes an annual (or an indoor plant) in cooler climates.

“The leaves are the main attraction,” says Schenk. “Nettle-like in size and shape, the foliage of Coleus is fantastically maculated. Seedling plants come up in endless varieties.”

“An amazing array of color combinations are available as well as leaf textures,” says BHG.com. “Choose from plants with scalloped, toothed, or fringed leaf edges.”

“Coleus is exceptionally easy to grow: Plant it in a shaded spot, keep the soil moist, feed it regularly, and be sure it has warm temperatures.”

5. Heliotrope

Half-Shade Heliotrope

While BHG.com says Heliotrope (Heliotropium arborescens) thrives in full sun, Schenk lists it as shade annual on page 253 of his book. “The plant flowers well in half shade,” Schenk says, “poorly in dappled shade.”

“Heliotrope is famous for its fragrance,” he adds, “which is most intense in the forms that have dark violet flowers. Pale violet and cloudy-sky-colored Heliotropes are often disappointingly weak in scent and barely worth planting.”

“An amazing array of color combinations are available as well as leaf textures,” says BHG.com. “Choose from plants with scalloped, toothed, or fringed leaf edges. Coleus is exceptionally easy to grow: Plant it in a shaded spot, keep the soil moist, feed it regularly, and be sure it has warm temperatures.”

“It’s a great container plant,” says BHG.com. “Try it in a window box or next to a doorway where you can enjoy it frequently.”

More Impatiens Alternatives

Luckily, there are many more excellent alternatives.

Our friend, Nancy Wallace of Wallace Gardens in Atlanta has many ideas for plants you can use instead of impatiens on her Substitutions for the Shade Garden page as well as an update on where the disease has spread.

Of course, much depends on the area you live in, so we’d love to hear some of your suggestions for shade gardens. What shade-loving plant do yout think deserves a chance to shine?

The post Watermelon Recipes to Kick Off Summer! appeared first on Bombay Outdoors.

This weekend is the official kickoff to summer, which means it’s time to take those white shoes out of the closet and get ready for some serious outdoor entertaining. So in honor of the season, we’re spotlighting a fruit that practically screams summer whenever you see it yet doesn’t always get the respect it deserves: watermelon.

How many backyard barbecues and patio parties have you been to with watermelon wedges just plopped on a plate? Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that, but frankly it’s a bit boring and the wedges don’t show off watermelon’s true potential.

First Things First

Before getting to all the creative watermelon recipes, let’s talk nutrition. Watermelon has the most Lycopene among all fresh produce. Why is this important? Because lycopene fights cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and much more. However, watermelon is not only high in lycopene but also in vitamins and minerals.

Now, before you use watermelon in a recipe, it’s important to start with a good one. Look for a watermelon that’s firm, symmetrical, and heavy for its size. And that creamy yellow spot on the bottom is a good thing. It means the watermelon sat out and ripened in the sun.

Ok– on to the fun part, the recipes. We’re going to provide you with a wide variety and hope that some of them inspire you to try something new.

Watermelon Recipes: Appetizers

The Naitonal Watermelon Promotion Board features ideas for every possible meal. However, I’m zeroing in on three appetizers, Prosciutto Wrapped Watermelon and Brie Fingers, Basalmic Caramelized Onion Caprese and Watermelon Feta Bruschetta. All three look easy to make and seem perfect for warm weather entertaining. For something a little more versitile, you can also try watermelon salsa, which can transition from appetizer to accompany chicken or fish.

Now, to get your ideas flowing, here are a few appetizer photos…

Watermelon Appetizer: Basalmic Caramelized Onion Caprese

Watermelon Appetizer: Crab Cups

Watermelon Appetizer: Checker Board

Watermelon Recipes: Main Courses

Of course the refreshing nature of watermelon makes it perfect for salads. One of the most common combinations contrasting sweet and salty is watermelon and feta cheese, featured in a recipe simply called Awesome Watermelon Summer Salad. Two others, Blue Watermelon Walnut Salad and Thai Watermelon Salad, showcase stronger flavors for more intensity. The Thai salad in particular would be delicious with grilled fish like salmon or shrimp.

The sweetness of watermelon pairs well with Asian herbs and spices. Shrimp Watermelon Sate and Seseme Chicken Watermelon are two such recipes that celebrate watermelon and the flavors of the East On the other hand, if you prefer to grill hamburgers, then Flash Grilled Watermelon Cheddar Burgers are for you.

And now, some various watermelon entrée photos…

Watermelon Sesame Chicken

Watermelon Recipes: Drinks

Now the part that you may have been waiting for– drinks and desserts! I’ve had plenty of mimosas and margaritas but never tried a Watermelon Mimosa or Frozen Watermelon Blackberry Margaritas, which both sound like winners for my next patio party. And for those who don’t drink alcohol, Green Tea Punch and Chunky Watermelon Lemonade will quench the thrist of partygoers large and small.

And now, some watermelon drink pictures…

Watermelon Recipes: Desserts

For an outdoor dessert that’s a bit more sophisticated and formal, Watermelon Lavender Sorbet, which uses fresh lavender leaves, can be served as a drink (with vodka) or dessert (without) while Watermelon Tarts , which are fast and easy to make, have been a staple for our summer parties for a long time. Another I haven’t tried but really want to is Almond Watermelon Tart, which looks perfect for July 4th since it has watermelon, blueberries, and yogurt.

Finally, some watermelon dessert images…

Believe it or not, I’ve barely scratched the surface of watermelon recipes so if these have piqued your interest, there are plenty more here. You can browse by type of food or cuisine, whatever suits your needs. And of course, if you want to just cut watermelon into wedges or use it in a delicious fruit bowl, that’s fine too!

When we were kids, playing outside games at the nearby school playground was much more interesting than staying inside where there was only an old black and white television with six channels.

We’d literally play outdoors all day, come home filthy and mosquito bitten, and then head out the next day to do it all over again.

Fast forward 20 years to the early “aughts” when my children were younger. We were lucky to live on a cul-de-sac with 13 children under the age of 14, including our two. During the summer there were endless games, bike parades, and tea parties.

Children negotiated rules, played hard, fell, got up, and got very dirty. To this day I think that experience helped all of them learn to cooperate and appreciate being outside.

Boy Playing Outside

Playing Outside vs. “Entertainment Media”

Fast forward 15 years to the present. All those children are grown and even if they were young, our electronic devices and fear for their safety have altered childhood permanently.

Currently children ages 8-18 spend more than 7-1/2 hours per day using “entertainment media” and only 6% of kids ages 9-13 play outside on their own, according to the National Wildlife Federation.

Yet a slew of studies from organizations as diverse as the American Academy of Pediatrics to The Children and Nature Network demonstrate that unstructured outside play is good for children’s physical and mental health.

So how can we get kids playing outside, where they can exercise both body and spirit in imaginative play? One thing you can do is check out play equipment and backyard playsets. Of course there is quite a variety on the market, depending on the age of your children and your budget. The following is a general summary of some basic ideas, but feel free to add your own!

Girl’s Outdoor Princess Tent

Backyard Playsets: Tents

For very little ones, you can purchase an outdoor “tent,” where they can make believe they are on an adventure.

Children like this because they can be used inside or outdoors and are usually too cramped for an adult to follow.

Many different brands are available at different price points and for children as young as two or three.

For a idea of what’s out there, check out some different outdoor play tents on Amazon.

Backyard Playsets: Climbers and Trampolines

Outdoor Dome Climber

For something that demands more physical exertion, try a climber or trampoline. These two are for children ages three to ten. Both garnered 4.5 out of 5 stars from reviewers on Amazon.com.

The Easy Outdoor Space Dome Climber costs $159.99 and reminds me of what my friends and I played on at school. According to the literature, the dome “encourages your child to climb up, over, and around the structure with other kids, giving them hours of playtime and creativity while developing their interpersonal and social skills.”

At $164.23, My First Indoor/Outdoor Trampoline Combo with Enclosure is a safe way to jump high and practice the gymnastic moves they’ve been trying all over the living room sofa.

Larger Backyard Playsets

Larger Backyard Playsets

If you’re in the market for something bigger (as well as pricier), larger backyard playsets are a good option.

Some people prefer all wood structures because they are more eco-friendly than plastic and don’t react to the elements the way metal does. (I’m sure we all recall how uncomfortable a metal slide is in the middle of July). However, there are also structures that blend materials, like wood, plastic, and metal.

Buying a large playset isn’t cheap and can cost you up to $4,500, although you can get something simple like a swing for less than $1,000. So if you choose to purchase something like this, you have to think years into the future: What will your children still enjoy when they’re older, faster, and stronger?

Make Your Own: DIY Backyard Playsets

Making DIY Playsets

I have no idea how to make your own swing or playset, but a lot of people have done it, including Chad — a dad who told his story of building a playset for his daughter on ShelTerrific.com.

His basic steps?
- Buying a kit from Backyardcity.com. (which has hardware, swings, nuts and bolts and step-by-step plans)
- Getting the wood and follow the step-by-step plans.
- Getting a plastic slide (not included) for around $200.
- Getting a friend to help with lifting.
- Getting tools, including a circular saw, cordless drill, socket wrench, level, square, and safety glasses.

For his full story and in-depth description of building, check out his story.

A Simple DIY Swing Set

How to Make a Simple Tree Swing

When it comes to DIY playsets, I guess it doesn’t get more basic than this. The drawing (from Instructables.com) says it all. Manila rope looped over a sturdy tree branch.

A piece of strong wood with 4 holes in the corners. Thread the rope through and tie off with simple knots.

Maybe it’s a good first step, provided you have the right kind of tree!

Final Buying Tips

If you are buying a playset or swing set, take a look at some of the helpful guidelines Treefrogsswingsets.com has on its website and then you’ll be more prepared. Squidoo.com listed its top 10 backyard playsets including some by Gorilla, Swing-N-Slide, and Big Backyard. Other popular brands include Treefrogsswingsets and Backyard Adventures.

Whatever you choose, it has to be something that your children can enjoy over a period of years, not just one season. But if you choose wisely, then your children will get the physical exertion and imaginative play they crave and you’ll have peace of mind knowing they and their friends are safe in your backyard.

Why Rosé Wine? In our Facebook poll this week, over 23,000 folks voted on their favorite patio/balcony drink. Wine was #6 overall and the 2nd most popular alcoholic drink. So what’s a GREAT summer patio wine? We asked Dan Sachs, wine expert and GM of Bin 36, my favorite Chicago restaurant. As usual, Dan has a strong, informed opinion. Take it away Dan…

There are some things that are just made for sharing with friends on a hot summer day. And, some wines just seem to taste better when it’s 75 degrees outside – or hotter. Rosé wines are made for summer outdoor entertaining.

Now, when I write about rosé wine, I am not thinking about white zinfandel – the sweet, blush-colored wine which was all the rage after the wine cooler fad fizzled.

The rosé wine I love is crisp, light and refreshing – and not too sweet at all.

There are a few details you should know before diving into the rosé pool.

The Rosé Wine Myth…

Red Wine Grapes

You might think, as I once did, that a proper rosé is a blend of white and red grapes. Not true, except when it’s a sparkler. Rosé wine is almost never a blend of red and white (except in rogue countries).

Rosé wines are produced from red-wine grapes (grapes with “black” skin) and often has a flavor profile resembling that of a red wine.

The color actually is a result of brief contact with the skin of the grapes – color comes from the skin of the grape, not from the grape juice itself.

All that said, rosé is vinified (made into wine) as though it were a white wine. The resulting tastes and smells are often those associated with fruits like strawberries, raspberries, or cherries.

And, as a result, most people drink rosé wine on occasions when they’d otherwise select a white.

Serve it Cold

Pair with Grilled Steak

Because of its profile, Rosé has the virtue of pairing well with almost any food. While I love it with grilled steak, it pairs well with fruits and vegetables fresh from your garden.

I think it’s best on a picnic or on your patio or deck– it’s like sunshine in a glass.

The key? Serve it very cold, and then you almost can’t go wrong.

I’ve got a few recommendations below – all are delicious in their own way and readily available at most wine shops and higher end grocery stores.

My Favorite Rosé Wines

2012 Rosé (Pinot Noir), Pisoni Vineyards “Lucy,” Santa Lucia Highlands, California Zesty and ripe with great balance. You’ll notice a floral strawberry aroma and crisp raspberry, peach and spice when you taste it. Approx. $18 retail

2012 Rosado (Tempranillo/Garnacha/Viura), Muga, Rioja, Spain Tart cranberries and fresh strawberries are the major players in the crisp rosé, the perfect picnic wine – refreshing and delicious. Approx. $12 retail

2012 Rosé (Syrah/Mouvedre/Cinsault/Grenache), Charles & Charles, Columbia Valley. Washington The aromas of wild strawberries and cherries bounce out of the glass giving way to a touch of citrus on the palate with a solid mineral frame. Approx. $9 retail

2012 Rosé (Carignan), Chateau Virgile, Costieres-de-Nimes, Languedoc, France This wine is like a watermelon jolly rancher – with some of the same sweet tartness in the glass. Strawberries and tart green apple abound with just enough acidity to ensure strong balance. Approx. $11 retail

Now comes the fun part! You’re ready to head outdoors and start enjoying the virtues of rosé wine. Bring on the HEAT!

What’s your outdoor décor style? Do you have one? As the weather heats up and people spend more time entertaining and relaxing outdoors, we thought it would be fun to spotlight some patio styles and tablescapes that caught our eye on Houzz.com and elsewhere.

While the photos below don’t include bright red plastic pails, muddy paw prints, or dirty gardening gloves, we know that in the end the best style is the one that makes you, your family and friends feel comfortable.

Perhaps one of the pictures below is a reflection of your style, but, if you’re like me, you’ll see things you like in multiple pictures.

Casual Tablescapes

Looking at these pictures makes me want to sit down with an ice-cold glass of lemonade or ice tea and take a deep breath of summer air.

Forget weeding. I just want to feel the sun and smell the flowers…

Global Tablescapes

Traveling is one of my passions and all of these pictures below remind me of time spent exploring foreign countries and new cities.

Why not bring a bit of the exotic to your own backyard?

Coastal Tablescapes

Our friends just bought a cabin up north and we can’t wait to visit. (I’m thinking of you, Karen and Karl!)

There’s something so relaxing about listening to the sound of waves lapping on the shore that I go into a vacation mode just seeing a vast body of blue…

Formal Tablescapes

Outdoor entertaining and décor don’t have to be casual, and you can be formal with even a small number of intimate friends.

These tablescapes capture the times when hamburgers and hotdogs aren’t quite enough, when Chilled Fennel and Cucumber Soup, not chips and dip, is the perfect appetizer…

It’s was a brutal winter for many of us in the northern and eastern parts of the United States, but now it’s FINALLY spring!

Tulips are blooming and lilacs are on the way. As temperatures rise, thoughts of getting out in the garden are on everyone’s mind.

For novices, one of the most disappointing things can be going to the plant nursery, falling in love with particular nursery plants or flowers, then realizing once you get things home and in the dirt that there’s plant disease. (You know this when a plant dies within the first few days after you put it in the ground.)

In the 34-second video we’ve included here, Patricia Becker (director of the Common Ground Organic Garden Supply and Education Center) whisks you through 3 keys to avoiding bad nursery plants.

Avoid Bad Leaves

Nursery Plants with Brown or Yellow Leaves

Plants with yellow leaves lack chlorophyll, the miraculous green pigment that lets plants absorb energy from the sun.

“Possible causes include poor drainage, damaged roots, compacted roots, high soil pH, and nutrient deficiencies,” says Sandra Mason, horticulturist at the Univ. of Illinois.

And brown leaves? On many common plants (flowers, ground cover, etc.) they can mean diseases like Botrytis blight (a fungus) or infection by worms called nematodes.

If you’ve got these problems in your garden, there ARE some plant disease solutions. But if you’re in a plant nursery, save your money and avoid them!

Roots Growing Out The Bottom of the Pot

Avoid Over-Long Roots

Over-long roots? Not a good sign for nursery plants, says garden author Colleen Vanderlinden.

“This means,” Colleen says, “that the roots have filled every available space in the pot, most likely by growing around in circles, and have tried to escape the pot to find water and nutrients.”

“This plant will definitely suffer from transplant shock, and likely will never thrive in your garden.”

Bottom line (pun intended): If you see a plant like this, set it down, walk away, and save your money.

Nursery Plants with Stem Problems

Avoid Really Long Stems

Check the plant’s stem, says horticulturist Barbara Eisenstein. While the Chow video warns about stems that are long, Barbara goes even further.

She advises checking the bottom of the stem — she calls it the collar or crown — just above the roots. Look for damage and breakage, she says.

“Make sure that the collar is not buried,” Barbara says. Plants left in pots too long sink down in the pot. “Unscrupulous nursery workers may then just “refurbish” the pot with a scoop of new soil.”

“This is very bad! The collar is buried, susceptible to disease, and the plant was sitting in old, tired soil for way too long.”

It’s not always easy to see whether the collar is buried. Younger plants, like those in 1-gallon containers, generally do not have very woody stems. If the stem is woody, then you may want to ask the nursery staff to check around the collar for you to make sure it is at the correct height.”

Other Suggestions on Buying Nursery Plants?

If you’re an expert gardener, you won’t need to hear these tips, but I found it helpful to see what Patricia talks about in the nursery plants video.

Now, I know there are a lot of expert gardeners out there. What tips do you have to help beginners? For example, when I first started gardening, I didn’t know that I had to deadhead my marigolds and roses but not my lantana. Another major mistake I made in the beginning was buying pretty pots with no drain holes. That error cost me some bright orange New Guinea impatiens I really loved.

Can you give any other suggestions?

When I first wrote this post in 2012, you couldn’t buy a potato barrel outside the UK. (As far as I could tell). Now, nearly a year later, that’s changed.

You can buy a potato barrel at Amazon.com — two different kinds, actually. Beyond that, there are several grow bags and containers to grow potatoes in.

Wooden Potato Barrel

As a general concept, growing potatoes in a container seems to make complete sense. We’ll look at a potato barrel or two (and the mixed reviews). And also how some gardeners are making their own DIY versions.

Wooden Potato Barrel

This is the first one I saw last summer. It’s a beauty to look at.

You can buy it now in the U.S. at Amazon for $140.

It was (and is) being sold by the UK garden retailers, like Primrose.

It’s made of wood, assembles in minutes, and holds up to 4 plants. Is it as good as the picture? The one U.S. Amazon review is negative, but the 6 reviews on Primrose are more positive.

The reviews note this “potato barrel” doesn’t have a bottom. Instead, it’s a grow bag with wooden slats (connected by wire) that wrap around to form the barrel shape.

Plastic Potato Barrel

Plastic Potato Barrel

Compared with the wooden planter, this plastic potato barrel is cheaper. It sells for 95 bucks (not including shipping) at Amazon. In the UK, at least at the garden site (withoutPrimrose it’s WAY less expensive. So maybe the U.S. price will drop down the road?

Either way, it’s made of polypropylene. (A plastic used to used these days to make everything from chairs to the Tic Tac box lids!)

The reviews are pretty strong. Amazon has one negative review, but the 94 reviews on Primrose average 4 out of 5 stars. In general, people say it’s a bit tough to assemble, but works well.

The sales copy says this planter holds up to 5 potato plants. That’s 21 gallons (80 liters) of compost.

Headed to the U.S.?

New Potato Barrel

This potato barrel looks new to me. I didn’t see it anywhere last summer, and I don’t see in the U.S. yet. BUT if the planters above made it to the U.S. in the last 9 months, maybe this one will be here soon.

I hope so.

It’s intriguing because the price looks lower, and the reviews are very strong. Five stars out of five at GreenFinger.com. Reviewers note that it’s easy to put together.

It also holds 5 potato plants and 24 gallons (90 liters) of compost.

DIY? Find Some Containers!

DIY: Find A Container

Timothy Hurst built his own potato barrels and wrote about them on Green Upgrader.

He says they reduce weeds, pests, fungi, and eliminate shovel damage to potatoes.

He started by getting containers, like these old wooden barrels. “Just about any 2- to 3-foot tall container will work,” he says.

Pick a container you can drill drain holes in, and clean it with a mild bleach solution, as he puts it, “to get out the nasties.”

How To Plant Potatoes

How to Plant Potatoes

This will apply whether you buy a potato barrel like the ones above, or make one for yourself, like like Timothy’s DIY potato planter.

“Fill the bottom of your container with about 6 inches of loose planting mix,” says Timothy.

“Add seed potatoes on the layer of soil… You can use the whole potato but I like to cut the potatoes into 1- to 2-inch cubes for planting.”

“Loosely backfill the potatoes with another 6 inches of your soil and compost mix. Then water.”

How To Grow More Potato Sprouts

Growing More Sprouts

Timothy’s next step — whatever barrel, bucket, or bag you’re using — is what can give you 100 POUNDS of potatoes in one container!

You have to wait for the plants to have 6 to 8 inches of foliage.

Then, says Timothy, “add another layer of soil mix covering half to three-quarters of the visible stems and foliage.”

Repeat this with every 6 to 8 inches of foliage growth.

You’ll be creating more potato sprouts, Timothy says, “as the plants grow up toward the top of the barrel.”

Harvesting Potatoes!

Time to Harvest

Think ahead about 10 weeks to harvest time. This is when your potato barrel planting (whether it’s in a barrel, an old wood bucket, or even a bag) really pays off.

There’s no shoveling your potatoes out of the ground! No shovel? No damage!

“When the plants flower and start to yellow, the potatoes should be ready to harvest. ” says Timothy.

“Carefully dig down with your hands to inspect the top layer.” Do the potatoes feel ready?

“Dump the barrel out on a tarp and inspect your bounty.”

Some Final Tips

You reap what you sow.

Some Potato Planting Tips

Here are a few more potato barrel tips from Timothy.
- Keep a few potatoes to use as seeds next year.
- Bush beans are a great companion plant.
- Try growing potatoes in sawdust instead of soil.

What’s on your bucket list of places to visit?

I have one friend who’s been scratching places off the list every year. Her last adventure was in Papua New Guinea, but before that, she and her husband toured Istanbul and went on a safari in Rwanda. Another friend has dreamed of walking the streets of Paris ever since taking high school French more than 40 years ago.

Kauai: The Garden Isle

Kauai’s Wailua Falls

My bucket just keeps getting longer, and I know it will be impossible to visit all of the destinations unless traveling becomes a full-time job.

One thing I was lucky enough to scratch off my list last month was the beautiful “Garden Isle” of Kauai, Hawaii.

As I gazed at the lush green landscape and dark blue ocean from the plane, all the months of seeing nothing but gray winter sludge magically melted away.

To someone who hadn’t seen a flower growing outside in six months, even those growing at the airport in Lihue seemed amazingly beautiful.

Hollywood Filming

Tree Roots as in Jurassic Park

For those of you unfamiliar with Kauai, here are a few fun facts: At just over 560 square feet, it is the oldest, and northernmost of Hawaii’s island chain.

Its vast, verdant rain forests, rushing waterfalls, pristine beaches, deep canyons and jagged coastline have made it host to a variety of Hollywood favorites, including Jurassic Park, The Descendants, Pirates of the Caribbean, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and King Kong to name just a few.

By the way, Jurassic Park 4 — according to the movie’s official website — will start filming in Kauai in July.

Bali Ha’i

Photo: CC 2.0 Tom Burke

One spot on Kauai has become a movie scene icon. In the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “South Pacific”, Bali Ha’i (sometimes spelled Bali Hai), is a mysterious tropical island.

The U.S. troops at Navy Base on the “main island” can see it in the distance, and think of it as a paradise, but only officers can visit. (The character Lt. Cable DOES visit, after Bloody Mary enchants him with the song Bali Ha’i).

So in the 1958 film version of “South Pacific” — filmed on the north shore of Kauai — Bali Ha’i is portrayed by Mount Makana, on the western shore of Hanalei Bay.

It appears in so many photos and paintings on the island, and is so often referred to as Bali Hai. It’s fame is probably deserved anyway due to it’s stunning shape and slope down to the Pacific.

Kauai’s Ambience

One of Kauai’s Wild Chickens

Unlike some of the other islands, Kauai still retains its laid-back vibe, thanks in part, I think, to a tough building code that says nothing can be “taller than four stories.” Thus, high-rises like those on Honolulu won’t be seen on Kauai anytime soon.

Like some other warm and relaxing places to visit (Bermuda, Key West), Kauai also has wild chickens. They roam everywhere, courtesy of the first Polynesians settlers, farmers who brought the regular type we’re all familiar with, and subsequent hurricanes which blew down pens and allowed both types to intermingle and breed.

The vast number of chickens and their ubiquitous crowing definitely promote the rural ambience.

Everything is on a more flexible “island time,” which is good thing because it’s dangerous to drive too quickly. The main road rings the island and as you travel up and down the winding coastline, there are beautiful vistas everywhere. However, you’ll have to pull over to admire the view or else you may wind up in the ocean or rolling down the side of a cliff. Up in the northern part of the island, one-lane bridges force drivers to take turns as signs helpfully note that local courtesy suggests five to seven cars at a time is the local custom.

What to do?

Woman Hiking the Kalalau Trail

So you may be wondering what there is to do on Kauai if there aren’t any big cities or large shopping districts.

In addition to admiring the beautiful views, we spent most of our time outdoors. We took a catamaran ride and saw whales, dolphins, and sea turtles. We horseback rode deep into the rain forest and hiked down to an 80’ waterfall for a picnic lunch—and then hiked out! We drove to the end of the Kuhio Highway and then hiked four miles of the Na Pali Coast.

We snorkeled in turquoise water so clear that you could see the fish without a mask and zip lined through the rain forest. We didn’t take a helicopter ride, but people we talked to said it was a great way to see places on the island that are inaccessible any other way. And of course, we saw a lot of beautiful sunsets, ate fresh fish and shaved ice and toasted with mai tais. I also learned that POG—passion fruit, orange juice and guava juice are an excellent combination.

While Kauai isn’t as well known for honeymooners as Maui or Oahu, we met quite a few on our trip along with many people with young children. In fact, I was quite surprised that there were so many “young folks” since I had expected to see more middle-aged people, like my husband and myself. In the end, however, it seemed that everyone found the level of activity that suited their purpose and enjoyed their stay amidst the flowers, sea, and sand.

I just want to go back!

Sitting on the back patio sipping lemonade (or something stronger) is one of life’s little pleasures.

However, different materials require various patio maintenance strategies to keep them looking fresh all summer long. Today we’ll take a look at some of the more common types of patio materials and easy ways to care for them.

Patio Maintenance: Brick

Brick Patio Traditional Landscape

Brick patios are popular for many reasons. First of all, bricks come in a variety of shapes and colors, so you can arrange them in interesting patterns. Plus, they’re quite durable and relatively inexpensive.

However, we found out the hard way what happens when you don’t maintain the bricks: grass and weeds grow between them they become loose. (Note– don’t wait until this becomes a problem! An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure– just ask my husband!)

This problem is especially apt to occur in places where freezing and thawing cycles are common as the expanding and contracting joints between the bricks become worn or cracked.

To solve this problem, you’ll need to sweep sand between the joints of the pavers.

If you want, you can stop there or you can then coat the pavers with brick paver sealer or joint stabilizing brick sealer, which are available at any home improvement store.

Poured and Stamped Concrete

Modern Concrete Patio

The key to patio maintenance of any concrete patio is to keep it clean and protected from the elements. Clean up spills promptly with dishwashing liquid and a bristle brush and then rinse it well so that no soap remains. If large portions of the concrete are stained, then use dishwashing liquid and a broom or power washer.

Sealing the concrete is important. Without sealing, water can damage and crack the concrete, especially if you live in a cold climate.

If your concrete has cracked, you’ll need to caulk it before coating the concrete with two coats of concrete sealer (be sure to let it dry completely between the coats). See eHow’s specific instructions on how to do this.

Patio Maintenance: Tiles

Mediterranean Tile Patio

Although patio tiles are beautiful, they aren’t for everyone, especially if you live in an area that freezes during the winder.

If weather isn’t an issue for you, then maintenance is fairly easy.

You’ll need to use a bristled broom to sweep up any loose dirt and and a power washer before applying an oxygen bleach solution speficically made for tiles.

Let it soak in thoroughly, scrub the tiles and grout and then rinse with the power washer to make sure all the cleaning solution is gone.

Patio Maintenance: Stone

Contemporary Stone Patio

The most common types of stone used on patios are slate, sandstone, and limestone.

As with cleaning any patio, elbow grease is important. First you need to sweep and rinse the stones with a power washer. Then comes the elbow grease.

Use a mixture of bleach (roughly 1 part bleach to 3 parts water) and scrub any stains before rinsing everything off again with a power washer.

If you want, you can seal your stones too. Here’s a great video on how to clean and seal sandstone and limestone.

Bottom Line

With proper patio maintenance, your backyard can look fresh for outdoor entertaining and relaxing long after this year’s annuals are gone. And there’s nothing better than sitting back and admiring all your hard work with a nice cold glass of fresh-squeezed lemonade!

Animals: Accent Decor

Stripes, spots, elephants and peacocks. Take a walk down the aisle of any store right now and you’ll see one of the hottest trends in décor — animal and bird prints — migrating onto various items, from patio cushions and vases to lamps and planters.

We love animals and their prints because they’re so versatile. You can go all out and redecorate your entire outdoor space with them or just sprinkle in a few choice items here and there. Plus, animal prints mesh perfectly with emerald green, the 2013 color of the year.

In light of everything out there, we thought it would be fun to explore a bit of bird and animal symbolism in different cultures. Who knows? Perhaps you are “drawn” to one animal over another through your subconscious.

Animal Symbolism: Elephant

Elephant Side Table

Let’s start with the elephant, one of the most popular figures out there right now.

The elephant symbolizes strength and power, both mental and physical. In India, the elephant god Ganesha is widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles, and more generally as the Lord of Beginnings, patron of arts and sciences, and the god of intellect and wisdom.

In most Asian cultures, a trunk pointed upward signals good luck, so look for that when you make your purchase.

Animal Symbolism: Giraffe

Giraffe: Handmade Planter

Giraffes are having their day in the sun now too. Having such long necks (up to 7’) allow giraffes to see far, so it’s not surprise that they symbolize farsightedness, and the ability to meet future goals with determination.

According to shamanicjourney.com., giraffes “serve as a link between the higher and lower worlds. Their flexible necks let them see what is behind, next to and in front of them.

This gives them the ability to know the future and understand the past, whilst moving with the present moment.”

Animal Symbolism: Camel

Camel: Door Hinges

Do you like traveling? If so, the camel may appeal to you.

Because of its purpose, to get people and goods across inhospitable deserts, the camel signifies actual or spiritual journeys that you may want to take (or literally be taking) soon.

As animal symbolic in outdoor décor goes, these door hinges are subtle. Handmade in Los Angeles, they’re not much larger than the top of most door hinges.

Animal Symbolism: Tiger

It’s not surprise that tigers, the largest cats in the world, symbolize strength, beauty, and power.

Tiger Print Patio Furniture

Additionally, for those who believe in animal totems, the tiger symbolizes primal instincts, unpredictability, and ability to trust your yourself.

This patio furniture scene has a fine example of animal print cushions. Animal symbolism aside, animal print pillows or patio cushions can act as neutrals, letting you use bright colors along with them.

This tiger print patio furniture set was photographed by Alex Amend on a rooftop terrace in San Francisco.

(The terrace itself was created by Frank Holbrook Design.)

Animal Symbolism: Hummingbird

Hummingbird Post Figurines

I have always loved watching hummingbirds stop to sip nectar from a bird feeder.

However, I had no idea that in the Andes of South America, the hummingbird is a symbol of resurrection because it seems to die on cold nights, but comes back to life again in the morning.

And as if resurrection weren’t enough, the animal symbolism of these multi-colored birds goes even further. The hummingbird also represents love, joy, and beauty.

No wonder they’re so popular with so many outdoor living enthusiasts!

Animal Symbolism: Peacock

Peacock Print Throw Pillows

Last but not least, we’ll talk about the animal symbolism of the peacock, a bird revered in cultures across the world.

Signifying integrity, nobility, and holiness, the peacock will definitely add a touch of grace to your outdoor décor!

Ancient Romans believed the bird symbolized the stars while in many Asian cultures the peacock represents benevolence, patience and kindness. In the west, the peacock represents the holiness and sanctity of the church.

Of course there are many other animals that are not listed here—zebras, cheetahs, owls, and moose just to name a few. If you’ve got a favorite animal print or piece of animal decor, upload it to our Facebook page and tell us why you love it!

Grilled Porterhouse Steak

When it comes to grilling steak (and other stuff), we’ve all got our secrets. Our favorite recipe or grilling method. Our can’t-go-wrong item for any BBQ. But, every once in a while, it’s nice to try something a little different.

Nothing crazy, but something fun to spice up the barbecue.

After all, if you’re cooking in your backyard or on your porch already, there’s no reason not to think a little bit “out of the box.”

Grilling steak — delicious juicy steak — requires 3 things: a good steak, a good marinade, and a clean grill.

Cuts of Beef

1. Grilling Steak: The Cuts

There are all the usual suspects for grilling: Ribeye and Porterhouse steak. These cuts are tasty due to the higher fat content, but they’re also among the most expensive cuts of meat.

Have you ever tried a Hanger Steak? The meat, which is tender and “beefy” in flavor, literally hangs from the center belly of the cow just past the last rib and loin.

If you can’t find a Hanger Steak, a Flat Iron or Skirt Steak will also do.

Grilled Skirt Steak

They all make delicious grilling steak, but do best when left to marinate for a day. Let’s talk about grilling with marinades.

Grilling Steak Marinades

When grilling steak in the summer, herb-based marinades are a great alternative. They’re light yet flavorful.

Start with lots of chopped fresh herbs. Choose the ones you like best, but thyme, rosemary and marjoram are great choices.

So are crushed garlic cloves.

Ingredients: Steak Marinade

Put all the ingredients in a blender and add a decent olive oil until you get the consistency of a smoothie. The key is to use just enough olive oil to make a very loose paste. But not too much so that the meat ends up “swimming” in the mixture.

Then, rub the steak with the marinade. You can store it in a plastic bag or a bowl in the refrigerator for the day.

Of course, it’s a steak marinade that’ll make any cut taste great. You can also use it for grilled chicken, lamb or even vegetables!

3. Grilling Steak: A Clean Grill

Slicing Against the Grain

Time for grilling steak! Make sure to season the meat well with lots of salt and pepper.

And grill the meat on a high heat to the temperature of your liking.

As long as your grill is clean — a key point — the nice thing with this steak marinade is that you don’t have to do any other preparation. Just put the meat on the grill and let it go.

Then slice the steak across the grain of the meat. This is important whether you’re grilling Hanger Steak, Flatiron Steak, Skirt Steak, or some other cut.

Grilled Corn on the Cob

Streak + Sides = Delicious!

Now, you need a flavorful side dish to complement your juicy grilled steak. Grilled Corn on the Cob is an obvious and easy choice – and really delicious most of the summer.

But, you can also make a nice tomato, cucumber and red onion salad in 15 minutes. It’s a very simple dish: cut up the ingredients – using a 3:2:1 ratio of tomato, cukes and onions – add extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar.

Get a good olive oil and real red wine vinegar!

Tomato Cucumber Onion Salad

It’s pretty important since there are so few other ingredients. The taste of the oil and vinegar makes a big difference.

Use a 3:1 ratio of oil to vinegar and season with salt and pepper to your liking. The nice thing about this dish is that is really tastes fresh – like summer – and is the perfect balance against the richness of a good grilled steak.

That’s it – grilling steak should be easy and delicious!

Now it’s time to enjoy your backyard, patio, deck, or porch with your friends and the great outdoors!

Mason Jar Solar Lights

You wouldn’t think Mother’s Day would be so difficult.

After all, it’s always on the second Sunday of May (May 12 this year). But somehow it sneaks up on me every year. Well, not this year.

I’ve vowed to make 2013 different. No more racing out to the store on Sunday before brunch for a card and a potted plant.

This year I’m thinking ahead.

Etsy Handmade Decor

Recycled Backyard Flamingo

Unfortunately, I didn’t inherit my mom’s “crafty” gene. I can barely draw a stick figure and don’t own a glue gun. So making something myself is out of the question. That’s why I turned to Etsy.

For those who haven’t heard of it, Etsy’s a social commerce website focused on handmade or vintage items as well as art and craft supplies.

Sellers range from full-time professional artists with teams of people to “mom and pop” operators working out of their homes.

This is for people like me (completely “uncrafty”).

Herb Garden Stakes

I can still get a unique, handmade gift for mom. (And it’ll look better than anything I’d make myself.)

Mother’s Day Ideas

The site makes it super easy to find perfect Mother’s Day gifts, no matter what things “your” mom likes. From jewelry and scarves to pottery and sweets.

There’s quite a selection of interesting outdoor décor for a variety of tastes. The mason jar solar lights are kind of country, the flamingo is a bit more rock and roll.

Spoon Garden Stakes

The flamingo is recycled garden art, made from buttons!

Handmade Garden Stakes

My own mom’s quite a gardener, so I first looked at garden stakes. The three to the right were my favorites, but there were many more.

The black ones are in a set of 7 metallic herb garden stakes. Theyalso come in chrome or a rustic color. They’re power-coated to last. And the 7 herbs? Thyme, sage, rosemary, dill, parsley, basil, and oregano.

Ceramic Garden Markers

The handmade spoon garden stakes come in a set of 11. They’re custom. Pick your desired artwork and spoon type depending on your budget and what you want. The stakes have a protective coating.

The ceramic plant markers are handmade in California. They come in a set of 12. You can pick yours from 43 different vegetables and herbs. From Arugula to Yarrow. (And just about any other vegetable or herb you might grow).

Mother’s Day Joke Gifts

Hummingbird Bird Feeders

Does your mom love a good joke? These two gifts are useful and humorous.

If she loves hummingbirds, she may like the first one. It’s a hummingbird bird feeder. It’s handmade from a recycled Don Julio bottle.

You can choose from hummingbird feeders made from all kinds bottles — from Corona to Coke!

I think they’re fun backyard decor. AND they look good for holding the nectar that’ll attract a hummingbird or two.

No Soliciting Welcome Sign

A nice way to enjoy birds and help pollinate your plants!

This no soliciting “welcome” sign might go right near the front door!

I think it’s hilarious, but it’s also well-made. The lettering is hand-painted using vinyl stencil, and the sign itself is sealed in a protective coating.

Mother’s Day Cookies

Of course, everyone’s mom deserves flowers. Who says they can’t be edible too?

These handmade treats look pretty and delicious. They’re vanilla sugar cookies that come in a gift box of 12.

Mother’s Day Flower Cookies

It comes with three “Happy Mother’s Day” cookies, three dogwood blossoms, three daffodils and three dragonflies.

The baker (Zoe, from Philadelphia) can also include a short, handwritten Mother’s Day note. You just type it in when you order. Order by May 1 and your cookies will arrive fresh on or before May 11!

Of course, in the end it’s not about the gift; it’s about spending time together and appreciating your family. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want some Mother’s Day handmade flower cookies of my very own.

Ironwork in Savannah

Beautiful wrought iron work was just one of the amazing things we saw walking through the historic district in Savannah, Georgia, last year.

It has such fine craftsmanship that it can look like lace lining a window or like vines of flowers and fruit curling to form a garden gate.

Used everywhere, it gives Savannah an old-world charm and timeless appeal.

It helps make it one of the loveliest places to visit.

Wrought Chair in Italy

An Ancient Art

As we explored, we’d look through elaborate gates into gardens. There we’d see patio furniture, made of wrought iron. They’d be back amidst lovely flowers and shaded by large trees.

All I could think was, “I wish my backyard looked like that!”

Well, my backyard will never look like that. For one thing, magnolia trees don’t grow this far north. And my garden gate’s made of wood.

French 1890′s Patio Chair

But it did get me thinking about wrought iron in general. And wrought patio furniture in particular.

It turns out that people have been using it since ancient Rome. The word “wrought” is an archaic form of the verb “to work.” So “wrought iron” means “worked iron.” The Eiffel Tower is made of wrought iron. So are swords, nails, rails and much more.

Wrought Iron Patio Furniture

But back to the patio!

Dorothy Draper 1940′s Chair

Obviously, wrought iron’s heavier than its wooden and plastic cousins. But if it’s properly cared for, it can last and look beautiful for years.

Some of the patio furniture here dates back over 100 years. Other patio sets are mere upstarts at 50 years old. The white chair’s in Dorothy Draper style. (Some say she created the interior design industry.)

The most interesting part, I think, is how patterns change with the times.

Wrought Iron Care

Modern wrought iron furniture has a protective coating. Even so, you’ll need to do some routine care to prevent rust.

Do you have antique wrought furniture? Post it to our Facebook wall!

The post Planting Zones: 3 Things To Know appeared first on Bombay Outdoors.

Why discuss planting zones? I think we’re all coming down with “weather whiplash” as more super storms shower us with everything from hail to the kitchen sink. And it’s not your imagination.

Last year the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture updated its planting zones map. The map breaks out the country into temperature gardening zones (based on readings from 1975 to 2005).

Bottom line? We may have had a cool spring this year, but overall much of the U.S. has warmed up. Most places increased half a zone (or about 5˚ F.) from the previous map done in 1990. And some places, like parts of Nebraska and Ohio, jumped up a whole zone (10˚ F.).

While the planting zones map is informative, there are 3 things you should know about it.

1. Planting Zones Ignore Summer

Shetland: Same zones as Alabama?

It’s true. The USDA’s map relies on winter temps. So summer heat doesn’t determine planting zones. That means two places with very different summers can be in the same planting zone!

Take the Shetland Islands, home of the Shetland Pony. They’re north of Scotland and near Iceland. Would you believe this northern place has the same planting zone as southern Alabama?

Though far north, the Shetlands are warmed by the ocean, so, believe it or not, they have about the same winter temps as Alabama. Both average around 41˚ F.!

Botanical Gardens in Alabama

But that’s in winter.

Summer is, of course, wildly different. Alabama gets hot, averaging 81˚ F. The Shetlands stay cool, with average summer HIGH around 57˚ F.

BUT since USDA planting zones map ignores summer, it puts these two places in same planting zone. It’s silly, of course. There aren’t many garden plants that’ll thrive in both places.

So how do you know if a a tree or perennial will thrive in your backyard? Check the planting zones map above, THEN check the American Horticulture Society’s heat zones. Together, they give you a good picture.

2. Planting Zones Ignore Snow

Snow protects plants in Quebec City

USDA planting zones also ignore snow.

Snow insulates yards and gardens from extreme cold. It protects the roots of hibernating plants. If snow cover is reliable, the plant roots are safe and this affects how and if they thrive.

Wikipedia uses the examples of Quebec City and Montreal. They’re both in Canada but get different amounts of snow. Quebec City is further north and in zone 4. But it gets lots of snow cover every year. That makes it possible to grow plants normally rated for zones 5 or 6. Further south and in zone 5, Montreal gets less snow. So it’s harder to grow plants there normally right for that zone.

3. Cold Snaps

Avoiding Garden Frost

There are other things that affect plants NOT considered in planting zones. Soil moisture. Humidity. The number of days of frost. And the risk of a rare catastrophic cold snap. (Remember Super Storm Sandy?)

So some risk evaluation – the probability of getting a particularly severe low temperature – often is more useful than just the average conditions.

After all this, you may be wondering what zone you’re in! There’s an easy way to find out. Check out the USDA’s new planting zones map and enter your zip code.

Happy National Parks Week! It’s fitting that it starts today. It’s Earth Day, a holiday to boost appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment.

Yellowstone’s Roosevelt Arch

The United States has 59 national parks. They range from Acadia to Zion. They’re in 27 states (plus American Samoa and the Virgin Islands).

And they’re stunning places to visit.

Yellowstone, created in 1872, was the first national park in the world! Now there are national parks in more than 100 countries on six continents.

If it weren’t for our 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt, we wouldn’t be celebrating National Parks Week. Sickly as a child, Roosevelt grew up to embrace the great outdoors.

He became a hunter and a nature lover. While president, he worked hard to expand the national park system.

Roosevelt at Mount Rushmore

During a trip to Yellowstone, he said the parks were made “for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” These words were later carved at Yellowstone’s north entrance.

I don’t think he’d have imagined his legacy. Millions of people “enjoy” the parks each year.

I need a garden plan. When I go to a garden center I feel overwhelmed by all the choices. I’m far from an expert gardener like my neighbor who’s been at it more than 50 years.

I’m never sure of the best places to plant my flowers or if the plants I’ve chosen will look good next to each other in the future. This has led to some minor summer catastrophes where all the plants were in bloom and then NOT in bloom at the same time.

The hardest thing, in my opinion, is trying to figure out what the garden will look like in two or three years, after the plants have (hopefully) taken root and begun to fill out. What to do? Fortunately, professional landscapers have also been mulling over these questions and have some answers.

Garden Plans

Gardens mean different things to different people, so experts say the first thing to do is figure out what you want from the garden. Do you want to grow vegetables or flowers? Do you want your garden to be a relaxing retreat or a functional space? Are you trying to match the color of your plants with any patio decor?

Next, figure out what things in your life will affect the garden. Are you willing to put in a lot of time at night and on the weekends to keep up with the weeds and bugs or not? Are you allergic to certain types of pollen? Do you have dogs or busy children that might be digging in the dirt? What kind of sun will the plants get and are the trees likely to grow much bigger in the near future? What is a typical amount of rainfall for your area?

Visualize Your Garden

Sketching Backyard Ideas

Next, you need to visualize something that isn’t there yet. Luckily, there are actually several ways to visualize your garden before you plant it. One way, according to professional garden designer Rachel Mathews, is to draw it out on paper first. Luckily, you don’t even have to be “an artist,” just careful. Mathews advises taking multiple pictures of the garden space and then taping them together for a panoramic view before drawing your proposed plants on top of the pictures. In this way, you’ll get a better idea of how your garden will really look since the perspective will be correct.

If you prefer working on-line as opposed to on paper, there are several programs available. See a list of recommended sites from Treehugger.

Garden Planning Tool

A Garden Planning Tool

Finally, another tool you can use to help you visualize the space is a garden wheel which Marilyn Denis featured on her Canadian television show.

Vesey’s calls it a Perennial Wheel. “Turn the dials,” their website says, “and visualize perennial plant combinations for your garden! Plants are organized on 3 wheels by height with symbols that let you know the bloom time, the sun needs and the colors of that plant.”

Vegetable Garden Planner

They have other wheels for annuals, shade plants, vegetables, bulbs, and herbs. Personally, I can’t wait to try them out to avoid future gardening gaffes before they even happen!

For details, go to Vesey’s website.

The mobile cell phone has, in 10 years, become big part of our lives. Will the mobile garden become important too?

People are “going green” in fascinating ways. I’ve seen an avant garde dress with planters sewn in from students in Denmark. And hairstyles woven with fruits and vegetables by the Japanese floral artist, Takaya.

But until now I hadn’t seen mobile gardens. Now I have.

A Wearable Planter!

Bike Garden: WearablePlanter.com

The planter on the right goes on a bike. Ramon Gonzalez (as knowledgeable a garden writer as I’ve read) said on Treehugger he loves this idea. He dubs it part of a “mobile garden” trend, with a “growing” (pun intended) number of artists and activists who want to “transform” urban spaces with flowers and vegetables.

One of the reasons behind the trend? The growing population of children in cities. Because of this, mobile garden trend-setters in urban areas think it’s vital for kids to “get out” in nature as much as possible. So if this means bringing a bit of nature to them — then so be it.

Necklace: WearablePlanter.com

Mobile Garden Trending

Mobile gardens have been spotted all over the world. In strollers. On tops of buses. Attached to Vespa scooters.

One example is what engineer Marcos Victorino has been doing for 30 years in Brazil. He’s used roof tiles in order to assemble garden beds. Then he suspends them in places like rooftops and schools and parking structures. You can see a video on his latest project, a mobile garden which moves from one location to another.

One of the easiest ways to bring a mobile garden to life on a small scale is with a bike. Gonzalez of Treehugger has a whole story on a bike garden “mash up.” This includes the bicycle planter shown here. The creator? Colleen Jordan, a designer and artist from Atlanta. She also has a wearable planter necklace. It’s the smallest mobile garden I saw.

“Not only will you be showing off your love of nature,” she says, “but you’ll be showing off a little piece of the future.”

Like the mobile gardening idea?
Check it out!
